Problem / Question
6061 and 7075 are both common in machined parts, but they behave very differently. Choosing by habit rather than requirement is a frequent mistake.
Key factors
- 6061: good all-round machinability, weldable, good corrosion resistance, moderate strength, lower cost.
- 7075: significantly higher strength, poorer corrosion resistance unless coated, harder to weld, usually more expensive.
- Both machine well, but 7075 rewards careful tooling and can be less forgiving of sharp internal corners.
Material considerations
For brackets, housings and general structural parts, 6061 usually gives the best balance. For high-stress, weight-sensitive parts, 7075 may be justified — often with anodising for corrosion.
What information a supplier needs
The load case, environment and finish requirement. With those, an alloy recommendation is straightforward; without them, any choice is a guess.
