Problem / Question
The same joint can be made with several alloys. Choosing well avoids weak joints, corrosion and rework.
Key factors
- Base metals: copper-to-copper often allows copper-phosphorus; steel or stainless usually needs silver with flux.
- Service temperature and corrosion environment.
- Joint clearance and fit-up, which the filler must fill.
- Process: torch, induction or furnace, and whether flux is acceptable.
Material considerations
Copper-phosphorus alloys are economical for copper and brass. Silver alloys add strength and work across steel, stainless and dissimilar joints.
What information a supplier needs
Base materials, joint design and clearance, service conditions and process. Classification names such as BCuP-5 or AWS A5.8 describe product classes — they are not certifications held.
