Brazing / Soldering / Welding

Brazing vs Soldering vs Welding

The three processes differ mainly by temperature and by whether the base metal melts — and that changes the design implications.

Problem / Question

Brazing, soldering and welding are often used loosely. The distinction matters because it changes heat input, joint design and material choice.

Key factors

  • Soldering: filler melts below ~450 °C; base metal never melts. Common in electronics.
  • Brazing: filler melts above ~450 °C but below the base metal; strong joints, less distortion than welding.
  • Welding: the base metal itself melts and fuses; highest heat and distortion, strongest monolithic joints.
  • Dissimilar metals often favour brazing or soldering over welding.

Material considerations

Copper and brass suit copper-phosphorus or silver brazing. Stainless and steel often use silver brazing with flux. Electronics use SAC or SnCu solders.

What information a supplier needs

Base materials, joint geometry, service temperature and whether the assembly can tolerate heat. From that, the process and filler follow.
