Problem / Question
Teams often validate a prototype and then expect the same route to scale unchanged. Usually it does not — and it should not.
Engineering context
At low volume, setup dominates cost. At high volume, cycle time and tooling dominate. The same design can be made by machining, extrusion, casting, stamping or forging depending on quantity.
Key factors
- Prototype: maximise flexibility, minimise tooling.
- Bridge volume: keep the design stable while moving to a faster process.
- Production: justify tooling, then optimise cycle time.
- Keep datum and tolerance strategy consistent across the transition.
Manufacturing considerations
A common pattern is CNC for validation, then extrusion or casting once the geometry is frozen and volume justifies it. Tooling should follow proof, not precede it.
What information a supplier needs
The current stage, expected annual volume, and which dimensions are truly critical. That is enough to propose a route across prototype and production.
